It’s pretty simple really, the idea behind Corporate Transport Plan (CTP), Plan de Déplacements (PDE) or Bedrijfsvervoersplan (BVP) (yes, we’re still in Belgium) is to greenify corporate mobility in Brussels. The idea sprouted from a combination of the environmental and traffic policies and was introduced to our Belgian capital in 2004. The general objective is to sensitize employees to veer towards taking more sustainable modes of transportation.
Every 3 years, the initiative provides our governments with crucial information around corporate mobility that can be used to further develop mobility policies in Brussels. From last CTP, we learned among others that the train surpassed the individual use of a car as preferred means of transport to commute to work, with respectively 36.2% versus 34.1%. Another thing that’s striking when we look at past CTPs is that the use of the bicycle for commuting purposes went up substantially. Modal share of 4,5% whereas it only accounted for 2,8%, 6 years ago.

Accessibility and distance. These are the two main factors that the Brussels governments use to conceptualise the entire idea behind the CTP. More concretely, this means that employees are influenced by a variety of factors but the accessibility of their offices with public transport and the domicile of the employee (inside or outside the Brussels ringway) at hand remain the most prevalent ones.
The map below shows an overview of the commutes to Brussels, based on the location of the office itself. We can clearly notice that for more centrally located companies, a variety of sustainable corporate mobility options are being used, more so than for the outer borders of the city, where the use of cars remains the preferred option.
It’s clear that soft mobility is easier to use when it’s available, the use of a (company) car seems to be closely correlated to bad accessibility in the first place.
We would like to emphasize that instead of seeing this as an obligation, we believe you should look at this as a grand opportunity. The plan will provide you with the following useful information:
Moreover, we have been going through a crisis, a pandemic altering the way we think and move around. The aftermath of a crisis implies a society in constant state of change, meaning we cannot go back to how things were before.
